Harmful algal blooms can severely impact RO membrane performance in desalination plants. Electrolytic sodium ferrate improves desalination pretreatment by controlling algal growth and preventing RO membrane biofouling. In a comparative study, the non-toxic, on-site generated sodium ferrate reagent outperformed traditional bulk ferric chloride in algae-impacted seawater.
